Dragons
I recently saw 'Eregon' on DVD, and although I liked the story and look forward to the sequel(s), I have to take issue with the appearance of the dragon, Safira.  Her face is way too flat, and her eyes too small and forward-facing.  The presumed descendants of dragons, lizards and birds, have long central ridges from brow to snout (beak), and large protuberant eyes that are more situated to the side.  Safira has a brow stop, for crisake!  Any comments?  Bax?

I tried reading Eragon, but I'm afraid I couldn't get very far in; for some reason it just wasn't engaging to me. I agree that we could certainly stand to take creature design in a few more interesting directions, and Safira's skull is far too anthropoid -- it's actually a bit distracting. The humaniform skull and the big eyes are a common visual grammar for 'sympathetic character,' but it is quite easy to take it too far.

I'd appreciate the chance to make a judgement on a character's moral status based on their dialogue and actions, but the obvious telegraphing based on looks alone is a bit condescending and actually works against suspension of disbelief, since the choice of how the character looks is so clearly calculated.

I agree that originality in creature design is to be desired, as long as they don't stray too far from the prototype. I did not want to see a Disney dragon in this film! The beady-eyed aspect of Safira was kind of off-putting, and didn't go with her voice. Her actions were believable, and not too idealized. Did you see the film?

HAven't seen it, but if this picture is any indication, that's a VERY mammalian dragon. Also: wtf feathered wings?

The 'poster' picture is really more attractive than the dragon in the movie! I prefer the type in your User pic...
